THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

The Alexander Technique offers a radically different approach to the challenges of everyday life. Rather than trying to force ourselves to change, we learn to recognise and gradually let go of habitual patterns of movement, thought and response that may no longer serve us. This can create more freedom in how we move, think and respond, allowing us to meet life with greater ease, choice and enjoyment.

This can be particularly interesting in our relationships with other people. We all have situations—and people—who seem to know exactly how to “press our buttons”, triggering familiar reactions almost before we have had time to think. The Alexander Technique helps us become aware of these automatic patterns and discover that we may have more choice in how we respond. Instead of being caught up in an old reaction, we can begin to pause, release habitual tension and respond to what is actually happening in the present moment.

And something else can happen as a result: when we change the way we respond, other people often respond to us differently too. Without trying to change or control them, a change in our own manner of being can alter the whole dynamic of an interaction. In this sense, the Technique is not simply about changing how we move—it can change how we meet the world, and how the world meets us.

For some people, this process can also be supportive in relation to the effects of stress or trauma, and to find a more balanced way to meet life’s challenges. By developing greater awareness of habitual patterns and learning to respond, rather than react automatically, the Alexander Technique may help create a greater sense of ease, safety, joy and choice in the present moment.
